ArtSnack: Great Artists Steal

By Brad Sweeting

Great Artists Steal, a painting by Brad Sweeting, after Picasso's Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.

This piece is inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in fact it’s a complete copy of his painting, but in my own recognisable style.

I titled it ‘Great Artists Steal’. That quote is another Picasso reference, his meaning was that the very best artists own their inspiration and steal from others to create the best art possible.

The third subtle Picasso reference is that this painting was extremely bold and extremely disliked at the time he created it in 1907, as it’s considered the birth of modern art.

This connects the three Picasso references into my own painting, a bold graphic, stolen, controversial idea.
