By Louise Pover

This mixed media oil painting was created as a response to researching my Lithuanian ancestry.
The piece is titled “Brangi Motinelei” which translates to “Dear Mother”, it depicts four generations of women from my mothers side of the family, including my great great grandmother, Saliomija (on the far left of the painting) who has been a huge source of inspiration for me as it was she who took the journey from Ziliai village, Lithuania to Scotland by herself, at just 14 years old, after running away from home using the money she made from selling the family cow.
Traditional Lithuanian folk pattern is included in the background which was carefully applied by hand using carbon and gold ink.
