Grids in a Grid, Variation 1 is an investigation into the variations of coloured grids that can be achieved with just three colours – magenta, turquoise and yellow – and two mediums – watercolour and pencil.
I am drawn to these delicate materials because they allow me to layer up line and colour incrementally and slowly. Working this way, I find a surprising range of variations with limited means.
In this painting I hope to engage the viewer in a slower pace of looking, that reflects my making process, by introducing subtle variations that reveal themselves over time. I deliberately left gaps in the chequerboard pattern, for instance, to halt the viewers’ attention.
For me, painting creates an opportunity, that we don’t normally get in our fast-paced lives, to slow down and investigate nuance.
I have a great appreciation for the cultural heritage of Staffordshire and had the privilege of working at the World of Wedgwood as a creative studio host for a couple of years, where many of my family members have also worked.
