Make-up wipes from past personas are deconstructed and transformed into masks acting as a presence in this installation – titled Masque II – while a ring of sawdust beneath acts as both plinth and stage.

Masks are defined as a ‘covering for all or part of the face, worn as a disguise, or to amuse or frighten others’, in this case the masks displace the performer portraying stripped back personas to offer an intimate insight into the guises used on stage.

Eve Travis is a circus performer turned multidisciplinary artist working with soft sculpture, live art, traces, and installation.

Informed by her circus background – including clowning, sideshow and subversive cabaret – her work dissects the intersection between stage performance and the performances of everyday life, with a focus on gender performativity and societal expectations exploring the duality of empowerment and disempowerment for women on stage.
