By Louise Pover

This piece was inspired by the story of The Kidsgrove Boggart which dates back to the early 1800’s. Legend has it, the Boggart is the spirit of a woman who was beheaded by boatmen as she travelled to London through The Harecastle tunnel.
I created this portrait with the aim to give form to the lady who became known as the Boggart. I applied black and grey toned charcoal to plywood using brushes to create a translucent, ghostly figure. The gap in the neck is a reference to the boatmen beheading the lady in the story causing her to become The Kidsgrove Boggart.
